Car Insurance Jeep (Car Insurance). What can a hole in my car's catalytic converter do?What can a hole in my car's catalytic converter do? I had it serviced a few weeks ago and the mechanic told me it had a hole in the catalytic converter which is where these loud noises were coming from and that it would need changing in a few months. The car seemed to drive fine until today, where I noticed that the accelerator was really stiff and I need to really push it down just to get to 10mph in traffic and when I would take my foot off the accelerator the car wouldn't gently roll to a stop, but would instead stop suddenly as if I had hit the brakes. I also noticed that the car is revving in neutral. Is this related to the catalytic converter or is it another problem? It's a 2001 Ford Escape 2.0 petrol and I only bought it a month ago so I don't know if this is normal for SUVs :/ a messed up catalytic converted is going to cost alot in fines and repairing when it comes to your next smog test cuz with that hole your not going to pass and cat can be a bit expensive to fix. No, it's not normal. You should get the hole fixed because it will leak exhaust into the car and maybe make you sick, not to mention cause the converter to malfunction. The other problem is unrelated. the catalytic converter burns any extra fuel reducing emissions. a hole in the catalytic converter not only is loud but also can be dangerous because flames may literally blow out of it. the accelerator problem seems to be something entirely different. thanks Phil G http://www.homebuilderwholesale.com/sprinkler-irrigation/landscape-supplies.html no that stuff doesn't tie in with the catalytic converter that just takes the bad smells out of your exhaust and makes noise the others are problems if your service engine light is on have auto zone use a scan tool to see what it is Cost you lots of money when inspection comes around. Jeep . How to Troubleshoot Electric Car WindowsElectric car windows are convenient to use. With just a touch of a button, you can operate your windows with ease. When something goes wrong with electric car windows, it can be frustrating when trying to figure out a solution. Some of the common problems with these types of windows can be identified with a few troubleshooting steps. In little time, you will have the ability to operate your windows without having to spend money on expensive repairs you are able to do yourself. Difficulty:Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Screwdriver Voltmeter Step by Step : 1 Check the fuse to see if it is blown if your electric window won't move. Generally, if only one side of your car window has the problem, the fuse is okay. Check the car's manual for directions on how to change the fuse or bring the car to a repair shop. 2 Check for a bad window switch. Remove the window switch from the panel of the car door. Insert a small screwdriver with a flat tip under the release tabs for the switches. Turn the car key to the "ON" position and use a voltmeter to test the window switch. 3 Lubricate the tracking on your car's window tracking if when you are opening the window it moves slowly. You will need to remove the door panel to lubricate the tracks. Check your car's manual for detailed instructions. 4 Use a voltage meter to test for proper voltage for the power window motor plug. If there is insufficient voltage, it will cause the window to move slowly. Tips & Warnings To prevent damage to delicate parts of the electric window, seek the help of a professional. Jeep . How to Troubleshoot Electric StartersThere's a range of reasons as to why a car won't start --- from the alternator not producing enough voltage to keep the battery charged to loose wiring and faulty equipment. You don't have to take your vehicle to a garage to figure out the cause of the problem. Through deduction, you can determine what part of the engine is causing the electric starter to fail, then replace the part on your own. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Voltage meter Step by Step : 1 Turn on the headlights to see if the battery needs to be charged. Sometimes the starter cannot function properly because it is not getting enough voltage to start the engine. If the headlights are bright and look as they usually do, then the battery should be charging fine. If the lights are dim, take a voltmeter and touch it to the terminals of the battery: negative lead to the negative side, positive lead to the positive side. If it reads approximately 12.5 volts, the battery is fine. If it reads 11.8 or fewer volts, then the battery is dead and you need to charge it. 2 Check the ignition switch. If the headlights dim when you turn the key to start the car, then the ignition switch should be functioning. If the lights do not dim when you turn the key, then problem is with the ignition switch. Use your vehicle's manual to locate the solenoid and ignition switch on the underside of the car, then disconnect the ignition switch wire from the solenoid and take the voltmeter to do a reading. Ground the negative lead to the engine mount and place the positive lead onto the wire. Then have a helper turn the key in the ignition. If it reads 12 volts, then it is fine. If it does not, then either the ignition switch needs to be replaced or there is a problem in the wiring, such as the battery cables. Check the wiring to make sure that nothing else has been disconnected. If something has, then reconnect it and take another reading. If the wiring isn't the problem, you have to replace the ignition switch. If there is no problem with the ignition switch, see step 3. 3 Check the solenoid. The solenoid has two metal posts for electrical connectors. The one on the right will have a short heavy braided wire running out of it that connects to the starter motor. Take the positive lead of the voltmeter and shove it into the wire, taking care to ground the negative lead first to prevent any electrical shocking. Then have someone turn the key to start the car. You should hear a clunking sound, and the engine may crank. The voltmeter should read 12 volts. If it does not read 12 volts, the solenoid is not sending electricity to the starter motor. The solenoid may need to be either replaced or rebuilt by a mechanic. If the solenoid clicks when you turn the key in the ignition but the motor won't turn, the current may be flowing through the solenoid coils, but not its main contacts. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the motor terminal of the solenoid, taking care to ground the negative wire. If you get no voltage when you turn the key, the solenoid is defective and needs to either be repaired or replaced. 4 Get the starter motor replaced if, after checking the ignition switch, battery, battery connections, wiring, and the solenoid, you find nothing wrong or if you replace them and the vehicle still isn't starting. Tips & Warnings You can also check the ignition switch by connecting a remote start switch between the battery's positive terminal and the switch terminal of the starter solenoid. If it starts the engine, record the voltage while the engine is cranking and compare it with the first voltage reading you did with the ignition switch. If it is +/- more than 1 volt, then the ignition switch circuit is the culprit. Always take caution when measuring electrical devices to ensure that you do not accidentally electrocute yourself or others. *Most vehicles built prior to 1974 use a non-electronic distributor ignition system, as shown in Figure 5-8. Most vehicles built from the mid-1970s to late 1980s use an electronic distributor ignition system like the one in Figure 5-9. Today, most vehicles use a distributorless electronic ignition system such as that shown in Figure 5-10. To make it easier for you to identify the sections in this chapter that deal with the type of system on your vehicle, I've placed the following symbols next to them: <2) = old-style, non-electronic ignition system * (D = electronic ignition system @ = distributorless ignition system 270

The ignition coil The ignition coil (see Figure 5-11) transforms the relatively small amount of electrical voltage (12 to 14 volts) that it receives from the battery into a big enough jolt of voltage (15,000 to 60,000 volts) to jump the spark plug gap. On most cars, a set of spark plug wires (sometimes called ignition cables) carries the high voltage to each spark plug. A distributorless system has an electronic coil module that does the same thing (refer to Figure 5-10). The spark pluqs The spark plugs (see Figure 5-12) deliver the spark of voltage to the combustion chamber just when the fuel/air mixture is at the point of greatest compression. The resulting explosion provides the power to propel your vehicle.
